In the spring of 2007, I substitue taught at Northstar Academy, a private school for students with disabilities. The first lesson I taught to the elementary-aged students involved creating characters for comics based on unplanned squiggle drawings. The lesson was adapted from a lesson I found at http://www.teachingcomics.org/. Each student drew a random squiggle on a piece of paper and then exchanged papers with another student. Then they worked to find a face, animal, creature or character in the drawing they received. The purpose of the squiggle exercise was to aleviate some of the pressure of drawing perfect human charaters. I wanted the students to focus on developing a visual story instead of spending a lot of time making a character that looked realistic. |
